Re: British bank accounts for expats

Not sure how you can have a "slant" on what is stated in the banking regulations, or whether bank A, B or C has said it will continue providing this or that service to this or that section of its...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

@Red Wine Fairy - would TransferWise not meet your needs? Probably not if you need a savings account or if you keep large amounts of money in your account, but it gives you internet banking and a...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

That's useful to know, thanks. Things have changed in the last 10 years.
Not surprisingly.

Re: British bank accounts for expats

That is true of course but even if you don't complete a tax return, HMRC will have tax records for you, and will have allocated you a tax code. Since your bank is required to deduct tax at source...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

UK banks seem to get information from somewhere so I don't think this would work in the long term.
When I moved to France I didn't bother telling my UK bank that I'd moved because I didn't have any...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

I've read about this issue in various places. Including on the EU website, reports of discussions and meetings where it was set out what conditions UK banks would have to meet if they wished to offer...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

My understanding is the same as Alianco's.
Some UK banks will continue serving customers in the EU and some won't.
Possibly some banks will continue to offer certain services but not other services.

Re: British bank accounts for expats

We'll probably all have to look again at the transfer rates and fees we're getting after 31 December. I suspect a lot of institutions will have to adjust them when / if the UK is no longer included...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

I don't see why not.
You can set up a sterling account which will be with the Transferwise (not Travelwise!) bank in London.
Give those account details to your tenants, they send the money and...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

You assume correctly.
I had lots of fun with that this year. Prior to 2019 I'd had a personal £ borderless account and a personal € borderless account, which I'd been declaring to be on the safe...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

I do
I use my TW account for receiving payments, and whenever a client pays an invoice I get an email saying that XXXX has made a payment of YYY€ into my account.
It's one of the things...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

This is Transferwise's statement on financial protection
https://transferwise.com/help/articles/2949821/is-my-money-covered-by-a-financial-protection-scheme

I wouldn't use TW for savings either,...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

I have also read that it's illogical for the UK to be making an issue out of state aid because EU constraints have not hampered it so far.
What seems extra daft is that I have also read that the UK...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

Yes point taken.
But ffishing, I haven't kept up with the negotiations on that, in fact I don't think they have all been made public, there have been various proposals and counter proposals but this...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

Well that's just it, isn't it. Everybody is unaware of what the situation will be come Dec 31st because HMG is still playing silly buggers. UK banks don't know if they'll be able to operate in the UK...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

If you just want to transfer money, you probably don't need to set up Borderless accounts, I think you can do currency transfers without. But for anyone who thinks they are about to lose their UK...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

Not sure what "the UK version of the same site" means. When I log on, everything comes up in French but I manage all my accounts (£, € and £) from the same place, you don't log in to different sites...

"while the UK has legislated so...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

Well I suspect that in fact the registered address of the client is what makes all the difference. Like VAT - what matters is where the client is resident. Eg if you are a business based France...

If a financial institution wants to offer its services in a different trading area, either there needs to be a comprehensive agreement in place...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

Hopefully the banks will interpret it that way and leave loopholes, although I suspect that strictly speaking it should be about where a person is resident.
Obviously banks do need to know which...

Re: British bank accounts for expats

I seem to remember that the EU warned people about this a long time ago.
Does it apply the other way round? What about Brits who own holiday homes in France and have French bank accounts?
