PR cards take about 12 weeks plus postage times. Unlikely you'd receive it before March. You're free to go back to the UK but you could run into difficulties when you try to get on a plane to come...

I remember well enough...CIC strikes...out of work for months...having to get MP involved. I was apoplectic.

It works out in the end if it's any consolation. Take it from me.

Hopefully not too long. I remember when I had a permit expiring in the middle of June and I went in process at the end of May. Was hoping to sneak it. In the end I was in process for exactly 2 months...

Possibly. Wife gets a J2 visa and then once we go to the US I can apply for some sort of "authorization" to work.

A position I am now in. Leaving my job this summer to follow my wife to the US (she's going to be studying there for a PhD).

Once my "2 years" is up I'll return to Ontario and attempt to find work...

You can apply inland or outland. Your choice.

Haven't heard of any British citizens being called for an interview. I'd imagine it to be exceedingly unlikely especially if you already live here...

You can apply online (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend/visa.asp) to change your status to a visitor. Just have to submit it and pay the fee ($75 from memory) before your current IEC visa...
