Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

Oh yes. I hadn't noticed it was a repeat.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

New series Spies of Warsaw. Stars David Tennant. The 1st ep. was so-so. Probably better if you haven't read the book. But it might improve. Tennant seems miscast to me (but I have read the novel)...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

We watched the archaeology programme Britain's Ancient Capital, which is about the stone-age remains on Orkney. It was fascinating.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I enjoyed To Walk Invisible, although the dialogue seemed a bit too modern in places.

For me the highlight of Christmas viewing was Alan Bennett's Diaries.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

For the history try Philip Ziegler's biography of Melbourne, and Elizabeth Longford's of Victoria.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I'm watching One Of Us (BBC). I'm intrigued by the plot; after two episodes I'm still not sure where it is going. It stars Juliet Stevenson, who is one of my favourite actors.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

On the political infighting, the drama is also less than accurate.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I don't advise relying on the programme for historical fact. Apart from anything else, the real Melbourne's sexual tastes included flagellation of young women.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

New Blood.

BBC. Crime/thriller/comedy. Set in London about a police detective of Iranian background and a fraud investigator who is Polish teaming up to solve crimes. Enjoyed it enormously.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

When I was a child I met Gerald Durrell when he came to give the prizes at my school. I was a fan of his books and I treasured my autographed copy of My Family and Other Animals for years afterwards....

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

Dr Thorne starts this evening. It is a measure of Julian Fellowes success that he is getting bigger billing for adapting the book than Trollope who wrote it.

It means that Tom Hollander is on...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I'm not sure I made myself clear. What I meant was that the Midsomer books are good compared to the TV, which is rubbish.

IMO, it is a distinguishing feature of poor detective drama, that when...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I found the ending of Shetland disappointing. I was going to start reading Ann Cleeve, but I don't think I will now.

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I'm loving the French slang I'm picking up. In the last episode I learned that 'ostrogoth' is a derogatory term. It was translated in the sub-titles as 'philistine' but the context suggested ...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I don't understand why Paul Dano's character Pierre never takes his overcoat off indoors and, despite being immensely wealthy, keeps entering rooms unannounced as if nineteenth century Russia had a...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I had to ask my sister-in-law for the backstory on Shetland, because it is mystifying if you haven't seen it before. The detective was divorced. His ex re-married then died. So his teenage...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I like Montalbano too.

Difficult decision this evening: War and Peace and Deutschland '83 both start at 9 pm. I think I'm going to save War and Peace for catch up.
