I believe a lawyer would be a waste of time and money in your case. It's a pretty simple and straightforward process to apply for a B visa.

My advice to you is don't overthink this application. In the meantime, wait for your police certificate to come through and apply for an SAR from ACRO (and possibly also from the courts and police...
