Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Sadly I agree with you - the time for writing to MPs has passed, at least for now

Writing to newspapers is a good idea, there might be some chances to put a human face on people whose lives are...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I agree completely - immigration of course can't be an open door but this is just crazy.

While I don't for a second begrudge any citizens of the EU their right to work and live in the UK, it...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Sadly I think you're right - but at the same time, I do think it's worth alerting MPs to the motion.

The more MPs that are told clearly and rationally just who the new rules affect (and how many),...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

On a more pro-active note, here's a link to the uk-yankee forum with news of a commons motion against the changed rules

If you've not yet...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

It does seem an unnecessarily cruel bit of trolling to me.

Formula, we get it - you think the new rules are great.

What you don't seem to get is that there are lots of people on this forum...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I noticed that. I'm not really sure what he hopes to add at this point aside from gloating at people whose lives have been negatively affected

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

The sad thing though, is that for many, doing a year in Europe first - at great disruption to their careers, children's education and social lives - may be their only viable option.

It's...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

It amazes me that some people still think it's as simple as saying 'British citizens should be able to support their spouse'

Yes, that's true actually, they should - but the old laws ensured that...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Certain posts on the uk-yankee forum suggest you're right - thought by their reckoning the latest that would allow you to enter the UK would be in February 2013.

It's worth noting that someone in...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

This is great information thanks.

Do you have a link to the petition? I had a look for it and missed it. Sorry if it's somewhere obvious, I'll keep looking for it as well.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

It's amazing how often people like to say immigrants are sponging off the state when there are plenty of rules in place that stop you from claiming benefits - but nevermind, who needs facts when you...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

OK this is either trolling or idiocy. Either way the forum has a block function for a reason. Bye.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Workers can easily make the new income level can they? Well lots would disagree:

But £18,600 is half again as much as someone would make working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, at the minimum...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

That's a good point - thanks. We weren't really banking on it, just something were were considering as we put our application together.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Saying you got immigration wrong doesn't mean supporting what has been introduced. There's a huge middle ground between the old and new rules.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

On the uk-yankee forum there was talk of asking for the visa to be issued the maximum 3 months from now. If that's done (often they ignore the request) you get a post dated visa and have just under 4...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I did a similar thing with Clegg - suggested it was somewhat incompatible with his recent speech about the lack of financial mobility in England.

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

I wrote to Clegg and May and got no reply. My father wrote to his (and my) MP.

The saddest thing is the Labour might even find it difficult to overturn when/if they do get into power - they'll...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

It's truly appalling.

One hope is that Labour have suggested they think it's wrong. I've written to Chris Bryant the shadow immigration minister asking to verify as if it's the case they've won my...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

Sadly yes - thought the bugger will be in the details. The Economist supports what a few on here have said - this will inevitably be challenged in a court at some point , though with Theresa may also...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

For what it's worth, some people on the uk-yankee forum have reported getting a reply from Chris Bryant, the Labour shadow immigration minister - very roughly it seems Labour opposes the new rules as...

Re: British citizen living abroad? Non-EEA spouse? This may affect you!

This is handy to know, thanks. We're currently trying to file before July 9th and were wondering whether to go for a rush service. Seeing this it seems a good idea.
