Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I always appreciate your thoroughness in analysing a given financial topic. The above full post is an excellent synopsis of the SSA reasoning behind WEP. So, without contradicting the post you made,...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Do you have any UK pensions other than the UK State Pension? Are all contributions to the UK State Pension made by voluntary contributions (Class 2 from US), or are there a number of contributing...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

That's always a possibility with SSA. ;)

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

That's good to know.

(I still wonder about that poor soul with 20 years at ELY and an actual 'stop work' retirement year at age 68. :-) )

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Yes, that agrees with the Factsheet :
"The Windfall Elimination Provision doesn’t apply if: You have 30 or more years of substantial earnings under Social Security."
But again, the general...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Yes, that all looks familiar, but relates to the example of someone retiring at, say 66 at their FRA, not contributing further to SS after 66, then claiming benefits at 70, with the perhaps...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I've been delving into the information given on the new WEP related pages. For reference, those 3 pages are:

The ‘culprit’ page, the main WEP planner page with the Scenarios -...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I've always been under the impression that the ELY was a part of the calculations for WEP, but not the method used in this latest page. I thought one's year of retirement, the entitlement year...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

As I read that page, I would agree with your interpretation. Everything depends on ELY.

Not sure I agree. The 'culprit' seems to be saying, IMO, ELY (eligibility year - 62 for all) governs all...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

No, it's because Jane didn't have 30 years of contributions at her ELY (age 62).

I've been searching this evening for confirmation. I found this post from 2013: "As I understand it, the WEP is...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I apologise for bringing up this massive, old thread again. The subject is our old favourite, WEP.

I'm sure there are some bright sparks out there who are going to say "Yes, of course I knew that....

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

If you are a UKC, resident in the UK, and not a USC or US Person, and your only source of US income (or assets) is US SS paid to you by monthly payments to your UK bank account, you are not required...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

That's only if you opt in to the Treaty. You could forgo the Treaty and declare the US SS on your 1040 return with its 85% maximum taxable amount. You would then be able to claim (85% of) the UK tax...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Since this is a thread on Social Security:

If you are resident in the US and receive US SS, it is only taxed at 85% maximum. I have a question: on the worksheet for line 20b (taxable amount of SS)...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

You cannot use that calculator, it is for those with 35 years (420 months) of substantial earnings.

You must use the "Detailed Calculator" from the SSA site. It is the only calculator which can...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

After 90 pages, all this SS/WEP confusion is becoming a bit staid, sooo, let's shake things up a bit.

There is an outside possibility that your SS benefits will not be WEPed, at all.

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I've only come back to this, but ran out of time to edit the above. So here's the edited version.

As I remember it:
In the more distant past, nothing was said about entering foreign pensions on any particular line. Then, when foreign became the hot word in 2011 (first year of 8938 reporting),...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Yes, that's exactly what it says in the treaty.

Unfortunately, the treaty also has what's known as a "Saving Clause". The saving clause says that 95% of the treaty doesn't apply to anyone who is a...
