Haven't used an IDP with a UAE licence when renting in several places..... got one for India just in case but they didn't care.

They'd never be able to enforce this law if you could prove you were a resident elsewhere and so would be committing an offence by renewing it. Any judge in the land would chuck that out in seconds.

Whats the point though? A foreign licence works just the same, in fact is actually easier as they don't need to confirm your address via the electoral roll and you may (unconfirmed) manage to swerve...

Been flashed loads of times over the years in the UK and have never had one come back to me.

I'm not saying the hire car companies don't give the Police / courts your details, more that they don't...

I'm sure you can and you would get it but whats the point as (as others have said) it's technically invalid as you are not a resident there.
