I'm in agreement with Bakedbean on the area. I certainly would not write off Penang in Malaysia based on perceived religious issues.

In the 90's and early 00's I spent a lot of time in Malaysia...

Drop Thailand off the list. It's warm, but as an ex-pat it's not easy to get by unless you have the support of a company or external income. It's not a strong economy either. There is potential...
