Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

I can't remember how much we paid for microchipping (it was in Europe, anyway), but that seems fair enough. I don't know about Canada, but there seems to be absolutely no standard fee for rabies...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

That should technically be fine. Does your vet usually give any kind of documentation with rabies vaccines? If not, get them to print something out and sign it, including the following details:

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

I don't know for certain, but the Wikipedia page on pet microchips suggests that your vet's right: Europe and Canada use ISO conformant chips, whereas the US has several different types in...

Re: changes in Defra regulations in the past few years

Very broadly speaking: yes. If you're coming from an EU or listed country, e.g. the US.

Are you re-entering the UK with pets again, or were you just interested to know?

If you are travelling,...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Hi Chi Tea, you might want to start a new thread for this, since this is a sticky about DEFRA regs and isn't very visible. That does seem very expensive, but using an agent is always going to cost...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Since Britwhore's info comes straight from DEFRA, and she's clearly not confusing the USDA-accredited vet and USDA state office stamps, surely it would be safest to follow this new guidance on the...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Best bet is to ask DEFRA. The USDA vet is an American thing, but there may be some local government agency equivalent in South Africa (usually connected to animals or agriculture) which is authorised...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

+1. It's potentially confusing, because you need to go to a USDA-accredited vet for all the practical care, but then to the USDA state vet (totally different) for the final paperwork to be signed...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Hi Cookiehearts, several people on the forum have taken this route with their pets, so it's definitely possible. The good news is it's often cheaper than flying directly into the UK. But it's more...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

If you are coming from an EU country or a 'listed' country, you don't need the post-rabies-shot titer test (blood test). You just need to wait 21 days from the date of vaccination to travel.

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

I sympathize with this. I switched vets because our original vet clinic had no idea what they were doing with the international paperwork, and -- worse -- didn't much care. They made an error on the...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Hi jkgoulds, I've replied to your other thread, but will just echo what Happyglow said: you'll probably find the airlines quicker to give you practical info than DEFRA. (Although, obviously,...

Re: New DEFRA Regs from January 2012

Hi everyone,

Another stressed pet owner here! I may be moving back to the UK (from California) at relatively short notice, so I'm trying to get things in order with our two cats now.

They...
