Yea, the ATO love immigrants and will screw every penny they can from you.

Why not leave it in a UK high interest account and just declare the interest each year in your Oz tax return?

I don't see how they can tax you on anything but interest earnt as the exchange rate is always fluctuating. If you're playing the exchange rate on the stock market then still comes down to profits...
