All day I've been hearing icicles fall off of buildings, thud, crunch, wallop.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Anyway, today appears to be the last day where it will be below freezing during the day and anymore snow will be the usual weather we get during the summer.

So can we stop talking about...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

I've never been to Malta but I had a job once where I had to talk to a lot of people in Malta and the general impression I got was that it was very crowded and expensive.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Ah, those were the days, I remember being on hold for eight hours once to talk to the Texas service centre for INS and also standing in a very long line indeed to get an I-129 petition application.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

I've got to say I totally disagree with what is being posted here about going without doing much research. If only because I see people saying they moved for money reasons, well taxes are one...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Actually yes that is one. Heard that one a lot, "oh I'm going to retire to Vancouver Island/Kelowna" and they spend the entire winter building their retirement home and furnishing it in their head. ...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

As I said a bit further back, I notice that a lot of people in Canada have mental coping mechanisms to get through winter. Lots of stories about how it isn't as bad as the winter of year X. Or...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

What kind of birds? Seems a bit odd, they don't usually fly back in March.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Well 3.78 litres is a US gallon so I'm assuming Canada isn't going to become part of the US.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

I thought it was because the Commonwealth was going metric. But looking it up apparently both the US and the Commonwealth wanted to go metric.

Legally speaking the US is supposedly metric....

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

The one thing I would say is that weather forecasts in Alberta are total wank during the winter.

Anyone considering moving here based on monitoring the weather forecast should bear this in mind.

I wouldn't want to live in Winnipeg either!

But as said, it's an atypical winter.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

But it's not really "extreme" weather, it's more the "it's a bit worse than average today" weather. Calgary has 190 days a year with temperatures below freezing (admittedly some of them are at night...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

OMG I just said to embrace winter.

I hate it when people say that.

Although I hate it more when they say it when I'm outside and just stepped through some ice into a puddle.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Last I checked there are tens of millions of Canadians and that is a news story on one storm during the worst winter in the last 20 years.

Yes newsflash, winter in Canada is not a fun exercise.

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

Rain and grey is more depressing than sunny and cold imo. Which is why I could never live in Kelowna, which is in fact much drier than Vancouver, too grey during the winter.

Okay you don't want...

Re: The truth about winter in Canada.

330 days of sunshine on average, hard to beat that!

But I do agree that where you are in BC is okay, I dispute Vancouver being better though.

So you're not exactly in a position to comment, are you.

I have actually spent a fair bit of time in Vancouver and as I've explained on here previously I'd take Calgary any day of the week. Sunny...

I'm getting the impression that you in fact are the one who has a distorted view of what a Canadian winter is like. Okay yeah it does get cold but I've never dealt with a ten foot snow drift or...

Yeah but how many winters did you go through in the UK, I wouldn't want to be in the floods there. Your experience of elsewhere isn't the same as the experience of most people on here.
