Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Last time I checked which was a very long time ago the spread of infectious disease is faster in the UK than in the US, I can't be bothered to look it all up but I know in Canada I get colds much...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Don't agree on that one either, NHS dentists were rare (although not as rare now is my understanding) and the quality of care I get in Canada is vastly superior to any dentist I ever used in the UK....

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

I get tired of these "pro" and "con" lists, because it depends where you are in the UK and where you are in Canada.

The only truly major downside to living in Canada is the weather during the...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

There's a lot of wrong things on it, the one that caught my attention was the comment about fresh food. Fresh food is bloody hard to get in Calgary other than the absolute basics. Yeah if you shop...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

What on a digital landline?

I know it's the same coax but it's not the same service. Which is why they're listed separately on the bill.

Only if you consider having a landline from said company the same thing as well. Haven't watched much telly on it lately.

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Yeah, that's right, what's the advantage of it? Honestly I just watch the news in the evening, have a look at the channel guide, hit record on anything I want to watch and then FF through the ads. ...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Well yes, I agree on that point. I don't rate the BBC that highly, other people seem to. And I think anyone who does at this point really is using rose-tinted glasses because they have had massive...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Yes I can, because I'm using my DVR from the cable company to FF. It is TV I am watching. You can buy a DVR in the UK and do the same thing with freeview, in fact you can buy a Tivo and do it here...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Because you're not comparing like for like. I could sit in the UK, hook up my media PC and watch all sorts of Canadian/US content, which actually thinking about it is what I actually used to do...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

But I'm comparing what I get on Shaw with what I'd get in a similar manner in the UK. I'm not comparing the BBC with CBC.

Plenty of news sources here, e.g. BBC World, all the American networks,...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

I didn't say live, I said on the internet. To me it sounds as though you're watching Canadian TV and watching the odd British show that's not on here on iPlayer and Youtube, which is not a fair...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Just more stuff on that I'm okay with watching generally speaking. I mean like last night there were a couple of sitcoms on and Rick Mercer which were watchable, none of them are on in the UK. I...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Which means you're not watching it, you're watching bits and pieces of it via the internet and mainly watching Canadian TV from the sounds of it. The internet is the internet, TV is TV. (Even if...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Well I realize you can watch some of this stuff on the BBC iPlayer or whatever, but if it's not in front of you, you don't become aware of it. The only UK TV show I've become aware of since living...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Agree on that one, also I think it depends on the context of why you are there. I usually go for business purposes so it's a different experience than some nice family visit or whatever.

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

I'm not trying to convince myself, the area of the UK where I'm from had really bad crime problems. No doubt I could have moved to an area of the UK that had less crime, I don't dispute that point,...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

But it's not a fair comparison because you have two things rather than one. You may think it's shit but how much of it do you watch? Because if you watch any of it then it's no longer a direct...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Homicide is a poor way of comparing crime rates, especially in Alberta as Edmonton has far more than Calgary does.

The day-to-day crimes that affect us the most are property crimes.

But anyway...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

The BBC is not better, and for one thing their budget has been cut massively and there are ever more repeats on. At the end of the day the BBC is some small subset of channels now. If you don't...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

I can get back bacon at Canadian superstore/Loblaw's. It's not bad either. I don't think food is cheaper in the UK, maybe certain things but I went shopping at Tesco's when I was there and it was...

Re: Your observations when visiting UK from Canada !

Bloody hate the place, and this was the first time I've been there in three years and it was worse than I remember which...
