Well, seeing as I'm on a roll, "catholic" means all-embracing, which I'm pretty sure doesn't apply to the Pope. He is, though, Catholic. ;)

No, it's a portmanteau word. "pan" is Japanese for bread (from French pain), and "ko" 粉 means powder.
