Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Thanks - having problems getting into AppleWorld because I haven't used it for so long. But that's my fault.

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

A paltry 7962 BA Avios miles are about to expire. Can I afford a bag of peanuts with them (excluding taxes, fees, and fuel surcharge of course)?

Seriously though, Delta is my "chosen" airline, I...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

I think it depends on when you bought your ticket.

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Avios will be doing it price paid soon (and cabin multiplier), rather than miles flown, so I don't think those mileage runs that some people do will be as useful anymore. So theoretically you'd earn...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Hmm, LAN Chile? Their international product certainly used to have a good reputation even in economy. Very nice wine even on a domestic leg I took 10 years ago () from LIM to SCL. Unlike Delta...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

One thing that struck me from the news:

Well yes - fewer people will be able to redeem anything so of course availability will go up! :banghead:

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

It's not just about raw cash: when you read back you'll see tips like paying your rent/mortgage/utilities with cards bought from CVS - money you're going to spend anyway, you just need to spend it in...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

You've already said that the 90 days counts from the date the account opens. That's fairly standard. Two weeks for a card is not unheard of, albeit frustrating.

I can't see anything they're...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

I had no problems with my US cards in the UK. The only thing that was an issue was a railway ticket machine but the ticket office had no problem getting me to sign instead.

I guess you might get...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

But that IS 90 days, and if you only spent $936.50 in those 90 days then what have they done wrong?

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

The cash price on that particular night was about $250 for the one room for the one night. It's about as fancy as we'd ever do in the near future so why not. I'd already booked for 50,000 points...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Just a random comment to say that I'm pleased with my IHG card. We've paid for hardly any hotels in the last two years! And we don't even try: that's just regular spending. This year we had our free...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

For the warm-up before the main event (Tonrob): Bluebird issue checks without a fee. I just started the Vanilla Reload method of buying with a credit card and topping up the BB account, in order to...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Oops. I'll take a closer look at the rack in CVS next time :o. I did wonder at the time but - oh well.

No, I'm just going to make sure it does actually earn me the points - since technically...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

I'm wondering whether I've messed up here. Went down to CVS and got myself a Vanilla gift card with a points-earning credit card, the latter part being a bit hit and miss as to whether they accept...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Correct, the points required and availability were combined a no-goer for us. Of course, those hotels are expensive anyway, so it's not surprising the points required is much higher than many others.

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

One thing I've learned over the past year is that bonuses are the way to go; spending is a distant secondary objective. Between the wife and I, we've amassed just 25,000ish Delta Skymile points in...

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

It's certainly helped me - thanks! I understand about not posting absolutely everything as there's probably new stuff very regularly. Maybe just comment on the exceptional deals every now and again?

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Yes, more the careful planning that Tonrob does than the amount as such! I'm struggling just with 3 credit cards to get the spend vs credit limit about right (and pay them off at the right time).

Re: Traveling cheaply and well using miles and points

Amtrak Guest Rewards are offering a 30% bonus on the points you buy or give. Small rewards but might be enough to tip you over the points needed for a reward for a few less dollars.
