No, you were an employee. If you had been a contractor, no taxes would have been withheld and you would have received a 1099. Because you were a direct employee of the company, you received a W2.

How? There are two options: company employee or contractor receiving non-employee compensation. Employee gets a W-2, a contractor a 1099.
