Thanks, feelbritish! Yes, it does sound as if you are in the same position as us. And now I have seen the passport and it is a real "Entry clearance" visa stuck in there and laminated all over one...

(Haven't seen it with our own eyes, family member signed for it as we are away, since we didn't expect it so fast, but we are assured it is the real deal in DH's...

OK so here's an update.

We went to the office at Varick St, downtown NYC, for the biometrics. Actually very easy and painless, hardly any wait, very nice personnel.

I thought I read somewhere that both Fedex and US post could supply prepaid voucher things that are valid internationally.

I dont know how fedex works, you have to set up an account online I think...
