I was told by an USCIS officer interviewing me, and I quote "your FBI clearance has expired, therefore we need new biometrics for you"

When we have biometrics done, apparently that is for the purpose of an FBI clearance.

Does anyone know what exactly is checked by the FBI in these clearances?
