I didn't know about that center tapped coil thing, but I don't remember if you took the A leg of one line and the B leg of another if you got dial tone. Easiest just to plug your butt into the phone...

If the phone is that old it will still have an original carbon granule transmitter in it. That's what's causing the crackle. Takes about thirty seconds to fix! (I was a linesman for the county... ...
