Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

So, like, I was trying to understand where this thread was at, after a long time away. And it looks like one of its major protagonists has been recently ghosted. Not my bestie or nothin', but just...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

The problem with any "not complicated" political/economic plan to correct some 'Bad Thing', that involves 6 different steps, is that that's 4 - 5 steps too many.

Each separate step pisses off some...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

It's worth taking a closer look at why. The whole primary and secondary educational culture in Canada is geared towards maximising and exhorting a path towards a university degree, of whatever type....

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Sorry, no. Driving further efficiencies in blue-collar work-practices (e.g. "time-on-tools" for carpenters, "time-on-throttle" for bus drivers) continues to be possible even today, enabling a...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Why would one expect that lifestyle to be achievable from those 'same' jobs, 2 generations further on?? The cars, the housing amenities, and the vacations (CoVID-period aside) have improved beyond...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

How is "working from home (in Hamilton)" not, in fact, "working in Hamilton"? You're really torturing logic to suggest otherwise.

"service industry"noun

An industry that does not produce...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Oh, bullshit.

Moving to Hamilton, and starting up businesses out of Hamilton-based homes is still very much "working in Hamilton".

And the three adult children of the family I know best in this...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

It would be interesting to see some data about that, if you can provide it.

My anecdotal experience suggests otherwise, e.g. a small cluster of friends and acquaintances who have cashed out of...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

So the QEW and 403 will become even more screwed than the Don Valley Parking Lot?

Ouch, but maybe not forever. Work-from-home arrangements, whether for gold-collar, white-collar, or pink-collar,...

So Ontario housing will slowly get more intensively occupied then...

And not as per foamer-bait like:
"If we're not able to build these homes, it's more people living in tents...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Yeah, pretty old news. The collapse of Moranbah and similar QLD coal-boom towns was a 2015 story, and the RBA tightened up on interest-only mortgages (and even more on investor vs owner-occupied...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Not sure that I wouldn't, if I could make a comfortable income there. It was certainly exceedingly attractive as a vacation spot, in a couple of stints there. And the "well run yet well off the...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

I'd like to see the detail, which isn't referenced in the article. I'd want to explore, in particular, whether the geographic definitions of each city's boundaries for real estate cost purposes...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

You're looking at the "average" numbers all wrong, in several dimensions:
- the income measure that drives property prices for Toronto, on the lower end, is "median household income *for Toronto*"...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

I did a deep dive into German (and Dutch) rental arrangements, from an Anglo expat's perspective, for a potential relocation just over a decade ago, that eventually fell over during the GFC. (So, a...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Well, my wife had to set up an office within our bedroom, but she'll never willingly go back to full-time commuting if she can avoid it, and her employer is now looking at home-based work for 80-90%...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Anecdotally at least, am not seeing the same, particularly in Oz, which went earlier and harder into home-based working than Canada initially did. After initial hiccups, home-based working seems to...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

So housing demand is now a disproportionate source of rebound growth.

I'm not sure I agree. A snap-back of the housing sector was inevitable, after a recession that was based on a health crisis,...

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

I doubt the reckoning will come quite yet, based on what's happening in Australia--a very similar market. Here the major-city RE market has rebounded quite sharply, with a post-Covid bounce based on...

Re: Moved..Off topic posts.. House prices in other Countries (not Canada)

Indeed. I spent the majority of my life in Canada, and most of my surviving blood relations live there.

And one of the family hobbies is to compare notes on real estate -- prices, practices,...

But why limit that discussion at all, Siouxsie?

This is the BritishExpats forum, after all, and both words in that title should count for something, even within the Canada sub-forum....

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Why then don't the provincial figures in the table reflect that, except for NB??

One would expect the national figure to be a (weighted) average of the provincial averages.

Re: real estate prices in Canada sustainable?

Something wrong with those figures.

How can Canada as a whole be up 31.71%, when the only single province with a higher figure is NB, at 31.81%???

It's not as if New Brunswick swings major...
