The problem with that is, he still could be denied entry to the USA after having traveled to Canada or Mexico. Then he'd be stuck on one of those countries.

This doesn't make sense. You wanted a B-2 visa so that you could get a 6-month stay in the USA....but you really only plan to be in the USA for 3 months anyway? (leaving in August, returning to UK...
