I know it says that, but I am sceptical that that it actually the case. People who go sooner than the 10-14 days commonly report that they were able to apply only 2-3 days after arrival.

You don't have a visa! It was a single entry visa and expired when you entered the US. The staff at the SSA office you visited are idiots - you are a Legal Permanent Resident of the US with a right...

Unfortunately it's not just the SS office - you will soon learn that the US government - federal, state, and city, is largely staffed by idiots. :nod:
