Take both but only offer your British passport as that is the one you are traveling on. Have the other one immediately available in case you are asked for it.

CBP probably are aware because he had to declare the visa rejection when applying for his ESTA, but in any case it was four years ago. I don't believe he has more than the slightest risk of an issue...

Congratulations, I am not surprised. :)
It won't hurt, but it is unlikely to be needed, though might be useful in the unlikely event that you're sent to secondary.

IMO it is the time since the denial that is significant, not the time you have held the passport, and as it was 2012 when the visa was denied I think you'll be fine. Waiting until the new year won't...
