Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

Unsurprising news (http://www.bbc.com/news/business-39933638) from Greece.

I think the only thing that surprises me is that Greece has managed to spend four years from 2012 not in recession.

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

I don't know about "car-crash", I think "Fraudulent Trading ( http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/fraudulent-trading.html)" is more appropriate.

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

"Go"? Greece has been bankrupt for a decade, and all the malarkey in the time since then has just been a pathetic pantomime so that the major creditors can avoid having to admit it...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

The failure to collect enough tax revenue has always been a farce in Greece, but it sounds like they have given up and decided that it is easier to cut payments to some of their most vulnerable...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

Still only bonds sold in France. Apparently Czar bonds were popular in France in the immediately pre-revolutionary period, and were held by almost half of all French households.

Digging a little...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

I don't know, but I doubt it.

I hadn't heard that, but a lot ended up as framed artwork to hang on the wall as they were otherwise thought to be worthless.

ETA: You are correct...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

I am not sure why the Greeks would want to stay in the EU if they abandon the euro.

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

Technically that is correct, but private bond-holders had their bonds cut by 50% in 2011, cutting Greek government debt by €100bn.

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

This study was presumably brought to us by the same people who announced that Italy joining the Euro in the first place was a good idea and economically "necessary"?

When you're stuck...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

  The austerity measures are pretty much required as a direct result of the single currency!

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

The Ottoman empire (which included the entire Balkan peninsula, including Greece) was known as "the sick man of Europe" in the mid 1800's, which I learned from reading the book on the Crimean War...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

I agree with your thoughts, but the IMF bailout of Greece was not unprecedented - the IMF bailed out the UK (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_IMF_Crisis) under Chancellor of the Exchequer, Denis...

Re: Road to a Grecian turn?

Undoubtedly. The history of Europe is a sequence of events and consequences that goes back at least as far as the Roman empire.

Why are they forecasting 40+ years ahead? Hasn't it occured to anyone at the IMF that Greece will reach a breaking point long before that?

A very interesting read (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2016/07/28/imf-admits-disastrous-love-affair-with-euro-apologises-for-the-i/), concerning an absurdly amateurish handle of the Greek-euro...
