Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Thank you, that's good to know, though as I will reach 30 years of SS contributions a couple of years before I expect to retire, it probably won't impact me, unless for some reason if I retire...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I remember that, and I was part of that discussion, but I have subsequently come to realize that I was wrong, and that it is the number of qualifying years of SS contributions that you have when you...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

If you are neither a US citizen nor a permanent resident then there would be no tax consequences - you will be paid gross, and only pay income tax in the UK. Also make sure that you let the SS...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

If you worked "8 or 9 years" you probably fall just short of the 40 quarters* (which is not quite the same as 10 years, but is similar) of contributions required for eligibility for Social Security...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

I suspect, but do not know, that the US SS Adminstration will take the first 35 years of contributions to calculate what is out of scope for WEP, so it wouldn't help you to pay more years.

That...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Which is one of several reasons that I am not planning on retiring significantly early - I am on track to escape WEP by just a year or two, so long as I work to my planned retirement age. Luckily I...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

A lot will depend on how long you expect to live. I heard the other day that if you are healthy at 60 there is a now very good chance you will reach 90. If you don't expect to reach more than 75-80...

Re: UK state pension and USA social security

Well that's clearly a disincentive to retire early, but as they push the age for "full" retirement older and older it is inevitable that they would also want to discourage early retirement.
