Re: Calling on Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

This is absolutely a public forum BUT this is a thread which is if you like equivalent to an immigration thread. It has extremely useful and important information for GPs in particular but other...

Re: Calling on Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

I've never come across a "you are a slave of the state" attitude from a Canadian. If we were merely maximizing income, why don't we take on twice as many patients?
Why do we have long days with few...

Re: Calling on Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

Extremely well put!
I think they miss the point that we are self employed, employing others and running a small business with all the associated costs.
Having all one demographic would be extremely...

Re: English language proof for citizenship

Feel free- we sent back asking for a review by a more senior officer and with a copy of their own instructions- highlighting the relevant bits to show we had sent exactly what they asked for. I even...

re: Chat for and with Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

I think I saw most of it before you edited your post, in which case I would say I like a bit of both!!!!
But message me the specifics again and Stinky and I will get back to you, if he hasn't...

Re: English language proof for citizenship

Don't count on it! Will depend on the person looking. We had to get our 5 year medical degree transcripts rewritten to specify that it was done in English before they were accepted.

Re: Question about tax resident

We would too but we have active life/critical illness/sickness insurance that we took out years ago and they agreed to keep active as long as we pay from a UK bank account.
Its also easier for...

Re: Question about tax resident

I don't think it does either! Anyway, they aren't getting it for any of us!
The letters are coming in sporadically. Stinky hasn't had one from the Royal Bank yet.
I just noticed on the Royal bank...

Re: Question about tax resident

I know and its bugging me.
They all say the same thing that they have to establish tax residency, and then maybe inform HMRC. They says its because of new rules signed by the UK Gov.
I'm quite...

Re: Question about tax resident

It is our bank, RBS and HSBC for the kids. Plus we have requests from some life insurance companies.
They all have our Canadian addresses.

Re: Question about tax resident

Excellent
Nor have I and I'll continue to do the same. I just wondered what others were doing or if I would stand out.
I suspect it may cause an issue or two but I'll deal with it when it happens...

Re: Question about tax resident

I have no issues providing SINs to Canadian financial institutions , my issue is the UK- especially in a letter which is not secure.
Did you give your SIN to UK banks?

Re: Question about tax resident

On a slightly different slant.
We have also been getting these letters for ourselves and kids.
They do ask for our SIN number which I had thought should not be given out and on the initial way of...

re: Chat for and with Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

TBH- and I'm talking BC here- whoever sold that to you was either not great at billing or was ( cynical me!!) trying to fleece you! "I'll take that difficult 80 year old with CCF, COPD, DM and you...

Re: Road trip, advice needed :)

Love that! I was "attacked" by a bat once in Vancouver before it fell into a bush- I often wonder if it had rabies.

My issue with hot springs are the number of people I see afterwards with...

Re: Road trip, advice needed :)

Horseshoe bay -Nanaimo is perfect for Whistler-Tofino!
Swartz bay is about 25-30 mins north of Victoria- thats perfect for an easy trip to YVR.

Just come back with your thoughts. I think as so...

re: Chat for and with Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

I think some of what you say is true but not the above. The "well, infrequent attenders" do not pay well, it is the complex elderly who pay the bills. In fact the more conditions, the more...

Re: Road trip, advice needed :)

Have to agree with Christmas, I love arranging travel, love road trips but your trip seems a bit expensive- even for me and I like spending! It also seems poorly thought out.
On the rare occasions I...

You were younger then!
More common in older people.
I assure you it is tested for in the UK and just as frequently.
Vit D is a tough one- we cannot test for it unless the patient pays as Health...

Re: Vitamin B12

So some basics!
Iron deficiency anemia is NOT the same as B12 deficiency anemia
A celiac will often be low in both. But treated differently

You can be low in B12 for 2 main reasons

Vegans-...

re: Chat for and with Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

Indeed, this sounds like bad news.
I assume its all going forward and any current investments are grandfathered.
My accountant meeting just got longer!
Thanks for looking into it!

re: Chat for and with Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

Most of this makes sense too, so maybe passive investment should be taxed but I still think active investment should be allowed- even in a different business if generating employment.
Re risk- that...

re: Chat for and with Canadian Family Practitioners/ex UK General Practitioners

This is interesting and why we need accountants! Thanks for explaining it clearly.
Everyone I've spoken to about this thinks the opposite.
But again, if we are only deferring tax, not avoiding but...
