Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

Have to agree there. We had the best time, living between Sydney Road and Lygon, at the north edge of the park. The people, the food, the pubs and bars, the little independent businesses, and minutes...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

Wow. Tons of character, generous rooms, good size block, a tasteful old place. And among lakes, I'm guessing it's a nice landscape around there.

When we lived in Brunswick (we loved it) we were in...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

Thanks for the info. There's no shortage of drugs and other addictions where I live now, but it seems ice is a special case... If it's true that it can be addictive after one dose, and that kids are...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

Doing a bit of research, it seems Ballarat was one of three VIC towns featured in a Four Corners programme in 2014, on the subject of ice. Seems like an awful drug and rapidly addictive. I read just...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

Fair point. I thought my constant silent comparisons between things here and there would start to fade away, but instead are increasing.

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

I think you might be right about Ballarat. We liked it there but the houses a short walk from the centre were out of our comfortable reach. Having looked again, it seems there are much more...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

I agree the evidence so far points to bricks and mortar being good long term. Is Aus not a special case though? Great place but propped up by export of natural resources and inward migration -...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

I would love to know more about Colac... (OH is a very skilled nurse, I'm a tradie but done a fair bit of site management too). We loved our trips on the GOR, and enjoyed the landscape inland. I can...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

We had decided that in Ballarat at the time, we only liked the old school Victorian style houses close to the town... never even bothered to look at other areas. A quick look on realestate.com.au has...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

Well put. Can't argue with that.

We loved living there. We agreed before leaving Blighty, if one of us decides to return, we both agree. The final straw for me was attending auctions ready to buy...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

I would have to agree, many towns in this part of the country are indeed crap and are far cheaper places to live than this one. And while it's an exception (edge of town here, overlooking the...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

We live in a former mining town in the north of England. It's OK and improving at a snails pace, and family and friends are here. But my OH and youngest talk about Aus every day, missing it a lot....

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

We really liked Ballarat, the affordability thing for us is about not having to both work silly hours just to pay the mortgage. It's looking like that might be something we have to do for a decent...

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

We were caught out there, bad decision in hindsight to sell up and rent elsewhere. Should have rented our property in VIC out to keep a foot on the ladder.

Re: Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

OK, but Melb, Syd, Vancouver, London, parts of LA and NY have been overpriced by international investors piling in. Those investors have started to pull back. I don't want a 750K AUD mortgage (NAB...

Considering a return to Aus, but different this time...

BE was a great resource in 2007/8 when our trip to Aus was just an idea that later became reality. On arrival we tried to help others on BE who were considering the move and needing info, but we were...

Re: Is the situation in the UK really that bad?

Random lottery seems a bit risky, our old milkman was a good and hard-working person but probably not the best choice for the role of deciding on fisheries policy

How about nomination?...

Re: BEST PRIMARY SHCOOL IN MELBOURNE.

Hi Oxana,

We got great advice on here while planning our move a few years back. We're looking at schools for the kids now, with the first due to start primary soon, so here's my two cents, based...

Well, you have managed that difficulty with great skill ;)

As someone said earlier in the thread, might be a good time to get off the backside and go visit some schools! Thanks.

That's very interesting. We have been looking at GW / MW areas.

Happy... that's the main thing, and comfortable. And not disadvantaged by an unhappy environment. Wise words, noted!
