Re: buying a home in the UK, living in the US

BUT!! Wait a minute!! I’m buying in Wales! No stamp duty there apparently. There’s something called Land Transaction Tax, I’ll have to do some research to find out if this is a better or worse...

Re: buying a home in the UK, living in the US

We are also thinking of buying a property that we can rent out and/or stay in when we visit the UK. We want to move back there when we retire, which will be less than 10 years, maybe sooner if we...

Re: 6 months back

Your sentence about “ that feeling of emptiness I’ve carried for years is now completely vanished” gave me chills! I know some people don’t feel that, but I do for sure, it’s always there. And it’s...

Re: Moving back home feels overwhelming

It doesn’t sound exactly like you’d be starting over, if you don’t really have long term friends or family over here ( in the US ), or a house that you own. Sounds like you’d be pretty much where you...

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

Thanks, I’ll look into this more. I was mostly a student before I left the UK, but I had a few little jobs here and there. Then there was a 6 month gap before I got another crappy job in the US.

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

I’m glad you got to spend time with your dad, it’s so important. I’m going to try to do more research to find out what kinds of nursing jobs I can get, I’m very happy in an outpatient job at the...

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

This is all good advice. Will I be able to get that UK pension if I’m also getting my US pension plus my own work pension?

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

I grew up in S Wales in the 1970’s so scruffy is home to me! I live in Portland, Oregon now, which used to be a beautiful and clean city. Now there’s wrecked burned out cars and torn tents...

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

State pensions are not going to be enough to live a good life, but we’re saving. Retired nurses don’t get more healthcare benefits, even working nurses get somewhat crappier benefits than a lot of...

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

Yes, those are things I’m realistically thinking about, how to make a partial transition before I actually retire, how to retire a bit earlier, getting a part-time job when I do finally move over...

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

I know what nurses salaries are like in the UK, and that’s why I’m not rushing to be a nurse over there. I don’t think I’ll be getting a UK pension, I’ve never really worked over there, but we’re...

Re: Nurses moving to Wales…??

Ooooh yes, the guilt only gets bigger every year. Not that my family has put any of that on me, they just want me to be happy. But the feeling of just being in the wrong place just gets worse the...
