Re: English food for xmas?

You can send bigger parcels without issue--just gets a bit costly. 2kg used to be the limit for the 'small packet' price (discounted). My office postman used to tell me to take larger parcels (jiffy...

Re: Who's Working over X-mas?

No work for us-hubby works today and then is off until the 2nd. I'm only part-time but will do a few hours next week (but I work from home, so that's ok).

Both our our companies give the next 2...

Re: Wake up and smell the coffee

I thought Kenco and Maxwell House were the same, as both are made by Kraft. I noticed a difference in taste here going from v hard water to soft water (I'm used to it now I guess).

We buy...

Re: Hot Water Bottles?

I got a bottle at the local pharmacy-CVS I think it was--but I can't remember if they had covers or not. We brought one hotbot with us, and the covers, too.

edited to say: here is one link you...

Re: English food for xmas?

Awww, I should have put one aside for you! I made my own, and we also bought some from a local shop. Our local shops are stocked with British goods, and I'm in the midwest where I didn't expect to...

Re: English food for xmas?

Mainly as above--mince pies, crackers, pud, cadbury's. The children are excited-we limit sweets but they've seen the goodies (the ones that mummy has been secretly sampling). The inlaws and extended...

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

Thanks for the further details. Had no idea Fla was so pricey and hadn't realised Yorkshire was so affordable.

Enjoy that 70p beer!

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

I had panic attacks the first few times I went shopping here--it's very confusing. I am a big fan of Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, although WF is quite pricey. We try to eat organic as much as...

How exciting! When do you go back and where will you live?

(Sorry-you've probably answered that a million times)

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

Thanks--it's terribly sad. She has COPD (obstructive pulminary disease) and had a stroke a few years back. She's the best example of why not to start smoking! We're glad to have time with her, and...

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

Nah, just our local midwest supermarket. Probably like Albertson's in your part of the world? Only listed stores as that is what Old William did--if we didn't buy nappies and such at Sam's our...

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

I never said Columbus was great, but I've no complaints as far as a place to rear children. My husband had the chance to work here (it's home for him) and it worked out. His Mum is here in a nursing...

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

It's not always a lie. Your figures provide an interesting comparison--no wonder you are happy to be back home! I am shocked at the US grocery prices-I've never noticed that high of a mark-up when...

Re: What would make you move back to the UK?

So much depends on where one lived in the UK and where one lives here--it's impossible to generalise.

My husband worked in the City, 9-10 hr days and 3 hr commute (90 min each way) on top of...

Re: Christmas puddings through customs?

I've got the ingredients--make my own every year. This woman I work with had a family recipe like this one using actual meat (4 lb meat and 2 lb suet), and she doesn't care for it.

Re: Christmas puddings through customs?

I agree. Someone at work asked me if my mince pies were 'the fruit ones or the meat ones'. She was in need of a 'fruit one/no meat' recipe.

Re: Who Bought Xmas Pressies Online?

The Bose deal sounds great!

We did about 80% of our shopping online-it's fabulous and saved us from going to the mall and Toys R US. We found free shipping offers at most places, along with lots...

Re: Christmas puddings through customs?

Should be fine--we used to bring them with us when we lived in the UK and came here for the holidays. Always tucked them in a case with the other treats we brought with us. When we visit the UK we...
