Re: Crispy duck & pancakes?

They call it Peking Duck, and it's on the menu (with pancakes!) at http://www.harboursidetauranga.co.nz/OUR-MENU/STARTERS_IDL=2_IDT=1791_ID=10588_.html . Personally I miss crispy chilli beef.

Re: Radio Control Models

I am not into it but it seems quite popular in NZ as a hobby, and there is a model boat lake and club in Hagley Park in Christchurch. Check out http://www.angelfire.com/mb/powerboats/,...

Re: Making ends meet.

Re: Disaster on the $ front

I don't think it will go higher than 2.5 for a year or so at least. I say that in the hope that it will be as wrong as all my other currency predictions. :)

Re: Disaster on the $ front

The Isle of Man depositor's compensation scheme is limited to £50k per depositor. There is no standing fund, so if everything hits the fan and there are multiple bank failures you may not get paid or...

Re: Extra moving costs - de-vanning

We had the same sort of thing with PSS/NZ Van Lines but they did it at their depot and only used two guys for a 20' container, cost about $200 extra as I recall.

Re: Comparing banks for online banking features...

Yes that's what I mean, Visa Electron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Electron) (and before that Visa Delta), but I see they are phasing those out now in the UK.

Re: Comparing banks for online banking features...

Yes EFTPOS cards are just like UK debit cards. They have a low fee per transaction for the retailer so they are more widely accepted for retail payment than credit cards. There is less of the UK...

Re: I could do a little help from a TV boffin.

Yes, if you have Windows 7 this is very easy to do using Media Center. With Vista or earlier versions it isn't so easy as Microsoft only added H.264 support to Media Center in Windows 7. You can...

Re: I could do a little help from a TV boffin.

Yes it won't work at all. Apart from any frequency differences the NZ terrestrial freeview system uses H.264 compression, the UK system uses MPEG2.

Re: Investing in NZ from abroad

Well that would be nice, but no, no matter where you invest you are subject to the tax laws of the country you are resident in for tax purposes. And any other laws for non-residents in the country...

Re: can we bring our cordless digital phone?

No, they don't. DECT phones use 1880-1900MHz in both (http://www.rsm.govt.nz/cms/licensing/types-of-licence/general-user-licences/cordless-telephones) countries...

Re: can we bring our cordless digital phone?

They should work fine and they use the same frequency band as the NZ cordless digital phones. Even the CLI (Caller ID) works. It is technically illegal to use phones without an NZ Telepermit though,...

Re: IT situation in New Zealand

Unfortunately NZ developers are mostly in thrall to Microsoft so enterprise Java and Unix are less popular, although jobs do crop up from time to time.
