Re: Job market - Ontario

It is still pretty tough at the moment, across all sectors, although there do seem to be more jobs advertised lately.

I've just got a job (media) after six months of very intensive...

Getting a police certificate if you're in Canada

I've been offered a job but my employer wants proof I have no British criminal record. We (stupidly) never kept copies of the British police certificates we received during the visa application...

Re: I'm going to tell my parents of our plans to emigrate tomorrow

Quite right. You have to do what is right for you as, inevitably, they will not be around for ever. It is always going to be a tough decision, but our parents would have been devastated if we gave up...

Re: Cost of living in Canada compared to uk

Anybody who comes here to get rich is probably making a mistake. As others have said, costs probably work out about the same overall as living in the UK. Our mortgage is cheaper but our car insurance...

Re: How did you feel after you landed?

We've been six months and it's all gone by in a rush.

In the first few weeks I wanted to get everything sorted immediately - get a job, buy a car, find a house, get our OHIPs, driving licenses,...

Re: Our medical's are coming up.

I'm not sure whether your particular health problems could block the visa, but there might be somebody here who is a little more knowledgeable about such things.

However, from what I remember the...

Re: mortgage without employment

We're in the same boat. HSBC were happy to lend to us as long as we put down 35%.

Re: Been here a few days - phew!

We had a good look at Arnprior, but fell in love with the Carleton Place area, and bought a house about 10mins west of it, close to Hwy 7 on the way to Perth.

Drop us a line if you need any advice.

Re: Last few days in UK getting hard

The impression we got was that no, you can't start work without a SIN. But obtaining one is very quick and painless.

Re: Anyone living or emigrating to Arnprior or Kanata area?

We live near Carleton Place, about 40min from Kanata and Arnprior. Both are nice places to settle in. Kanata seems to be split between houses and hi-tech firms, while Arnprior is a quiet place at the...

Re: Last few days in UK getting hard

We thought exactly the same way, and decided we'd say our goodbyes then stay in a hotel in London for a few days before our flight. Saying goodbye was obviously difficult, but the time doing touristy...

Re: PR Card

It took us a couple of months after landing to buy a house. Once we did, we simply phoned the number on the form you're given upon arrival, and the cards came in the mail a few days later. Simple.

Re: Last few days in UK getting hard

Good luck. :fingerscrossed: Probably not the best time for the stress of an interview, but I hope it works out for you.

Re: gutted!

We had friends (an expat and her Swedish husband) in the north who might have been able to help us jobwise, but we were concerned about the relatively high taxes and the difficulty of becoming fluent...

Re: gutted!

I don't know about your language skills, but have you thought about Europe? We kept it as a Plan C (after Canada and New Zealand). Thanks to the EU, it's relatively easy for Britons to move to...

Re: Last few days in UK getting hard

Realise that what you're feeling is perfectly normal. Millions of people have done exactly the same as you, and undoubtedly all of them felt just as nervous, excited and worried.

Our last days in...

Re: Decision made

Thanks very much. Sometimes I do go on, but I think it's important to give details so newcomers to the whole emigration process can understand the emotions, thought processes and problems involved....

Re: Decision made

Before we left the UK, we attended an emigration fair where it was said that most people emigrate for two reasons: a better lifestyle or better income. For us, it was the lifestyle.

If we can get...

Re: How much did it cost you to emigrate?

It cost far more money than I ever want to think about, what with air fares, staying in a hotel for a month while we found somewhere to live (we'd been renting a house in the UK for a year before we...

Re: just spoke to the rudest person form Cnadian law firm!!!!!!!!!!!

Other people may have differing opinions, but we couldn't see the point of using an immigration consultant. As long as you can handle a fair amount of form-filling (none of it too complex), it's...
