Re: Your experience of the citizenship interview

I just had mine in Sydney on Saturday. Easy stuff; just name a couple of the oduties and a couple of the benefits of citizenship, a police check and that was it.

I was told that the waiting time...

Re: Poms and Perth

Perth definitely has a lot going for it, but the house prices\salaries (for those not working in mining\geology etc) is making it a less attractive option than it had previously.

Also after...

Re: Irn-bru

You can get it in Sydney in some of the major supermarkets like Woolworths. I also saw it a lot in Perth (I think it is made in WA).

The Diet version isn't very good, I think they use a different...

Re: What was your reason for moving

I moved mainly because I was fed-up with working in the South-East of the UK with all the associsted costs and commuting times. I always wanted to go back to my native Glasgow (part of me still...

Re: UK TAX - Do we notify tax office when we go ?

When you see the Inland Revenue, ask them whether they will require you to fill out any Self-Assessment forms before you go. I got into a bit of a mess with the IR even though I visited them a couple...

Re: Not Depressed.Really

Hi Barry,

I think I know how you feel; I would guess it's that lack of a sense of belonging and your history being part of that of your surroundings. I grew up in Glasgow and feel my bones are of...

Re: mortgages!

Yvonne\Allan,

You should have no problem getting a mortgage with such a sizeable deposit and once one of you have secured a job. We used one of those mortgage brokers (Aussie Home Loans) to give...

Re: whats the best car to buy in Aus?

Subaru's are definitely worthy of a mention for reliability and for being 4-wheel drive. However, this means they hold their value in the used market.

Re: Sydney house prices -Shock, horror!!!!

Exactly! Just like the UK the value of a property is more than often dictated by the economic potential of the locality; how easy it is to get a job and how much salaries are. It is less to do with...

Re: Sydney house prices -Shock, horror!!!!

Indeed. Sydney is becoming London-like in the commuting respect. Considering Sydney's road and transport crisis, unless you live within walking the distance of the CBD, in some inner surburbs you...

Re: Sydney house prices -Shock, horror!!!!

Concord, Annandale Leichhardt 1.2 million for anything "half decent"! What in earth are you looking at?

$1.2 million would buy me a detached property in Drummoyne, Rozelle or Balmain. Surburbs...

Re: Coping with the Aussie heat?

The heat was easy to get used to; it's the cold I am now having difficulties with! When Winter comes in Australia it feels freezing to me even though it's about 16 degrees. I grew up in Scotland!

Re: Is there something I'm missing?........

Hi Lynn,

I would check asap that your will not be liable for self-assessment for years previous to the current one. The current one can probably be tied-up before you depart.

I was salaried and...

Re: Is there something I'm missing?........

Hi Lynn,

You may want to consider the Inland Revenue. It seems to be policy that when you leave the country and have been paying at a high tax bracket that they want you to a Self Assessment (if...

Re: Australia the most expensive house income ratio in the world.

Exactly! From my experience, average house prices in Sydney are more comparable to Watford than London. I know where I'd rather live! It would be inconceivable for me to own a house in London...

We are now looking to move to the Inner West (Glebe and Balmain are top of the list, though I worry a bit about the traffic round Balmain). I work over in Ashfield (very edge of the Inner West)...

Re: Going to Sydney

Sorry, yes, Cronulla, I've been there, very nice in fact. I think there's a big National Park in that area which has a lovely wee town (can't remember it's name) and beach.

Re: Is anything missing from Oz that the u.k. could bring?

British supermarkets. The ones in Sydney are dreadfull. I find the Supermarkets a poor relative to the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury's or Waitrose in terms of size, enviroment (some are scruffy) and...

Re: Going to Sydney

It's a lot to do with what you can afford (especially if buying - rent is affordable in all areas) and what sort of lifestyle you like (beach, urban, harbour). What part of Sydney you like, generally...

Re: Are you English or British ?

The UK isn't really a country indeed, it's what it say on the packet a United 'Kingdom', a unification of the Scottish and English Protestant crowns (hence the religious\political divisions in NI)....
