Re: Moving to Christchurch - Early Jan - Commutable Suburbs / Towns?

It's the same all over. When we came we hired a furnished holiday home for a month to give us time to find a rental. It took the pressure out of having something ready when we came and if you find...

Re: Moving to Christchurch - Early Jan - Commutable Suburbs / Towns?

To be honest I would get in touch with rental agents now and get on file with them. Properties are in high demand and it might be worth your while paying an extra months rent to get a decent...

Update from Bookemjano

We're still here, happy and healthy, despite the earthquakes! I come on here and have a look around every now and then, usually when the homesickness hits so that I can see all the joy and optimism...

Re: 3 years in - some rambling thoughts!

Three years for us tomorrow too. Hard to believe how quick the time has gone and the changes we've been through.

No regrets, other than my Lotto tickets never win. We're happier, more...

Re: Learning Maori

This is a good one - http://library.christchurch.org.nz/Maori/TeReoKete/
It's got some links in it as well to hear the pronunciation.

Re: What are our chances ??

Hi, we did it that long way round - came over with visitors visas and got jobs then applied for residency, and it worked out really well for us. I'm not saying it was all plain sailing - you have to...

Re: Whatever happened to Sunshine and rain (rotorura)

Phyl, I'm so sorry to hear about Ali. My heart goes out to you and your family. I can't imagine how much harder it would have been for all of you if you had of made the move here and then had this...

Re: Guys, We're here, in Christchurch.

Wow indeed! Hope you had a great journey, and not too much jet lag and that the kids enjoyed it. See you soon!

Re: Is anyone addicted to the coffee in NZ?

Arnott's Scotch Fingers - lovely thick chocolate, I think you're meant to snap them into two but they're much better 'king size'! And they don't go soggy when you dunk them. Yum yum.

Re: Our Story..... (so far)

Really great post, realistic and balanced. Our kids have settled here so well, both of them talk about going back to the UK (which they now call 'up there', NZ being 'down here') for a holiday only,...

Re: Cost of Living

We're happy as pigs in poo too. Best thing we ever did, the kids are flourishing and we are less stressed, eating better, and have a great social life. I wouldn't say we're loaded at all, we manage...

Re: 2 quick questions. Thanks.

Don't know about the medicals for the babies, our kids are much older, but the fees if you get an ITA are - $800 for lodging the ITA, then $300 per person (or $1200 per family) for the Migrant Levy...

Re: Can you succesfully get residency starting from a vistor visa?

Yes you can! We just found out we got ours. Nine months after arriving, but a lot of that delay was us sorting ourselves out and nothing to do with Immigration, and the fact that some of our...

Re: Need a rental in Rangiora

Do you want to borrow the tent? Or you can have the garage, though at the moment I think the tent might be warmer!

Re: Can you succesfully get residency starting from a vistor visa?

Hi, this might have been us? The kids are called Chris and Helen, but then again maybe it was another couple you're thinking of.

We came over on visitors visas, got jobs, applied for and got...

Re: My Top Tip

Hooray! A thread without a whinge or a whine or the possibility of it turning into a UK vs NZ slanging match. Well done Biddy!

We did as much research as we possibly could before we got here,...

Re: the main reason people leave new zealand is a lack of.......

We've just got the hang of keeping a logburner fire going for a few hours and it does actually warm the house up lovely once it's going, but whilst we're waiting for it to warm up we're all sat in...

Re: the main reason people leave new zealand is a lack of.......

Top three Ben and Jerry's if you could have them delivered? Mine would be:

Chunky Monkey
Coffee Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz
New York Super Fudge Chunk

with Phish Food on the reserve bench. Or...

Re: How did you sort yourselves out when you 1st came to NZ?

We booked a furnished villa for the first two weeks, as near to the airport as we could get because the last thing we wanted to do was come off that flight and have an hour's drive. The cabbie we...

Re: Housing Opportunity

Could you let any of the land out, say for pasture or paddock or something? So it makes you some money towards the mortgage for now, but remains yours. Or have a bed and breakfast 'wing' on the...

Re: replacing furniture and house contents- advice please!

And doesn't that delivery charge really pee you off? We spent over $11K in one shop, and then they wanted $50 for delivery. So we told them to cancel the order, strangely enough they cancelled the...

Re: Can anyone offer advice to a newbie?!

You're right, it's not on the shortages list, but we've just had 50 points granted for it as skilled employment. It took ages for us to get the work permit for it though, so make sure you keep...

Re: Missing Family

This is definitely the worse thing about moving overseas, and I miss them all like mad, particularly my best friend who still hasn't even got the hang of e-mail, so Skype or webcam are no-goes. But...
