Thank you for the input - i am going to contact the lawyer that helped set up the J-1 visa. though, before I spend another couple of $$'s on lawyer fees.. I like to figure out some solutions!

I am also preparing to file, and have read in the Guide to Naturalization that you must be a resident within the state you are filing in for a minimum of 3 ...

Trainee J-1, it is for my husband who is a Swiss national. He started on November, 1st 2004 and the visa is valid for 18 months.

Do you know if it is possible to extend the trainee visa done...

Does anyone know of how it can be done or if it can be done to extend a J-1 visa that expires in 18 months? Can status be adjusted, or can the time frame given on the J-1 be extended?

thanks for answering my question - during the almost 12 months i was out of the US, i have proof that i was finishing off studies that this would be evidence enough for reasons being out of the US...
