Re: Section 4L children

I agree and I have pointed out that out in similar circumstances. That said if one had acquired citizenship at birth vs. much later in life it would at least been possible to move to the UK while the...

Re: 4L and double descent questions; American born 1993t

At some level you are right but the problem is the Home Office has taken the stance unless there is some provable attempt to move to the UK just the mere fact that your parent could have moved is not...

Re: 4L and double descent questions; American born 1993t

Your understanding is pretty much spot on. Basically unless you are willing to go to court and try for some Romein type decision you are not likely to get anywhere with the Home Office. Other than...

Re: Potential route to Citizenship under 4L

You are correct that is a straight forward claim.

Re: 2025 Applying for British Citizenship

Congrats. Unfortunately the Home Office has started assessing folks who can apply under other sections of the law on those sections. 4C confers citizenship by descent so there is no automatic...

Re: I believe I have a route via 4L for citizenship

Folks are correct consular registration wasn't a thing in commonwealth countries so while your mom has a claim you do not. That said I have seen one positive data point of a 4L clam made on consular...

Re: Section 4L (ARD) advice - Born 1992 - Grandmother born in UK

Ah thank you. So many twists and turns in British nationality law.

Re: Section 4L children

Yes! I am currently travelling right now but when I get back to the US I am going to look at the family tree. The US side of my family is all pretty much all from New England so there might be a...

Re: Section 4L (ARD) advice - Born 1992 - Grandmother born in UK

Also you are ignoring the fact your Dad could have registered via 4C starting in 2003 so if he wanted UK citizenship there was path for him 19 years prior to 4L.

Re: Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

That has been my interpretation. While my daughter's circumstances vary a little from yours they are similar and I came to the same conclusion for her. Essentially the only relatively broad paths...

Re: Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

It is not limited to cases of automatic acquisition since one of the most popular use cases of it is based on consular registration which was not automatic.

Re: Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

4C confers citizenship by decent so unless you actually meet the requirement of 3(2) or 3(5) I do not believe there is a path for you. Your minority at the time your dad acquired citizenship doesn't...

Re: Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

What would be your 4L argument in this scenario? Most of the 4L arguments you see here are those based on consular registration path where it was possible for the second generation born outside the...

Re: Form UKM and supporting documents

From what I have read elsewhere from experts you don't need a copy of the mother's passport. I cannot confirm that myself because everybody in my family including my mom has all the the passports...

Re: Section 4L children

For what it is worth my daughter is in the same place. My mother was a British born woman and I recently registered as a British citizen but because my daughter was born after 1987 and became 18...

Re: Section 4L application timeline?

It seems like at least some of the US consulates may be backed up a bit. I got approved in middle of October and just got my date to go to the embassy in DC for citizenship ceremony in mid-December....

Re: Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

Thanks for the insight. I doesn't impact me because I just did a straight 4C application (only child turned 18 just before 4L became a thing and not having more) but it will likely impact my...

Re: Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

I agree I am pretty sure this is to cut back on minor children who would not normally be entitled to British citizenship getting it. Neither of the folks who were assessed under alternative sections...

Possible Change in Interpretation of 4L by Home Office?

Heads up, it looks like the Home Office may have recently adopted a more narrow interpretation of who is allowed to use 4L. There are now two data points on Reddit in the last week where folks were...

Re: Section 4L Application

Your screen capture is leaving out the other requirements. My read of that list is you need to meet all the applicable requirements in that list so to get back to BritinParis' point how do you meet...

Re: Form UKM eligibility - grandmother born UK 1912, need (I was born before 198

For what it is worth I did UKM (slightly different scenario than you) and I didn't use a lawyer. Honestly it is mostly a document collection exercise. In my case I was claiming UK citizenship from...

I will preface this with I am absolutely no expert but as somebody who is going through getting UK citizenship for myself (born to a UK born mother before 1983) and I would love to get UK citizenship...

Thank you so much for this response and you other responses in this forum which helped a lot with my research. I'll move forward via UKM then.

First off, I want to thank folks for all the excellent information here as it has already helped me immensely in my research on getting my UK citizenship.

That said, I have a quick question for...
