Re: Moving family from UK to New Orleans

A year is a difficult amount of time. Moving from UK to NOLO will definitely be a massive culture shock and there will be lots of things to sort out. It's a great opportunity, but also could be a bit...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

The choice to pay voluntary NI depends on how long you think you'll be out of the UK. If you think you'll have enough Class 1 NI record from UK employment to get your state pension and other benefits...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

The US/UK Tax Treaty gives sole taxation rights on cross border state pension/social security payments to the country of residence. You file a US-Individual 2002 to claim the treaty tax treatment and...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

I did a quick calculation about the rates of return and payout rates implied by my lifetime Class 2 NI payments and the SP I'll receive. There are lots of assumptions and estimates and everything is...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

And that was the case before around 1990, expats could pay voluntary Class3 NI.

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

Those are all good reasons to allow expats to keep up their NI payments and they could do that by paying Class 3 NI. What I don't understand is why Class 3 was replaced by Class 2. Maybe not enough...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

Yes, my US SS will be twice as much as my UK state pension and I have other retirement income sources so losing UK SP would be annoying more than anything else.
I sometimes wonder how the Class 2...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

Paying voluntary NI past 35 years isn't really sensible, but as you say it's inexpensive peace of mind, and I sort of feel bad about how little NI I've paid over my lifetime for the benefit I stand...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

That sentence is why I decided to keep paying Class 2 NI past 35 years while it lasted. My qualifying number of years has already increased once from 30 to 35 and going from 35 to 40 does not seem...

Re: Moving to Orange County from London

I'm spending $15 for 20 rolls at "Market Basket" in New England. Prices are often half what I'd pay at "Whole Paycheck" and I've stopped shopping there since the Amazon acquisition and the high...

Re: Moving to Orange County from London

That's good as it will make taxes etc easier. Saying "consultant" comes with an implication of self-employment.
Out of interest which NASA division or program will you connected with the most? In LA...

Re: Moving to Orange County from London

You say you are a consultant, but that you work for a UK company and are being transferred to a US division. So are you self employed or an employee of the UK company?
In LA you will need two cars...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

I'm a couple of years off Medicare, but I've been looking at the cost recently. Part A and B are the same as everyone else, no Part D as my Medicare Supplemental plan covers that. Medicare...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

Yes the numbers for a family plan are generally twice that of the single plan. Happily I'm still in good health and just spend the $1200 annual premium and some trivial amounts for an office...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

I actually got my plan wrong a bit as I have $100/month premium (my old employer puts in the rest of the premium ~$500) , $400 deductible and $5k annual out of pocket max and once that is reached...

Re: Returning to UK after 7 years in US

I'm lucky to have retiree medical insurance from my employer and pay $100/month for a very comprehensive plan with a $5k deductible. I also pay $25/month for dental insurance and just had some dental...

Re: No bank account without address // Cannot rent without a bank account

I came to the USA 35 years ago with 3000GBP in travelers cheques, two suitcases, an H1B visa and a university job. I cashed 1000 GBP at a local bank and stayed in a hotel for the first week and paid...

Re: Rishi Sunak held Green Card for 6 years as MP

Re: Rishi Sunak held Green Card for 6 years as MP

If Rishi wants to go back to the US and gets residency through some investor or "special person" visa I bet his wife won't be doing that as that would open her worldwide income up to US taxes.

Re: Rishi Sunak held Green Card for 6 years as MP

But, as has been mentioned, if he used the Green Card to enter the US then that does not help his claim of non-resident status and if he filed as a non-resident then he's on shaky ground...or at...

Re: Rishi Sunak held Green Card for 6 years as MP

Yes that would align with the concept that after one year of not being present in the US a Green Card holder might be presumed to have abandoned US residency. So the reporting that Sunak kept his...

Re: Do you really want to move to Florida?

My aunt lived in Britain and the cross border taxes were complicated for her and her husband and they spent a lot on management fees. It was not a sensible way to invest their spare cash IMO. She...
