I was, then I left, now I've been offered another postdoc, but since I've already had a J-1 I can't do J-1 again, so they want to petition for an H-1B instead.

I don't think there's any way to use the UK-US treaty, as Article 20A therein specifically requires you to be resident in the UK *at the beginning* of your US visit. Having moved there later doesn't...

Agreed on Transferwise. They now also have a multi-currency "bank" account that comes with a debit card. That basically gives you the same exchange rate as for transfers, but for small point-of-sale...
