I saw an email screenshot, but I cannot testify to it's veracity(!), that suggested middle of August.

Yes many have (we did).

No one has had the biometrics processed by that method yet. Unfortunately Sopra Steria has not developed the software, yet.

My only concern: I read that the system for using previous biometrics isn't working. Is that accurate? Or might that just be some noisy people on twitter? :)

I do not have any more information. I do notice that currently centers are being re-opened in other parts of the world (India, Qatar, and others), which I suppose...

For medical reasons we need to leave the UK for a little while. :/

we were advised to wait right until the last minute applied the Friday before it expired over the weekend, in the hope priority...
