Re: “Willing to bear arms”

Modern citizenship is best understood as a country having a claim on you. Countries decide who their citizens are, and that may not even involve consent. If in doubt, consider that one can't just...

Re: Certified copy question

That's unfortunate ! Do your ID card category descriptions appear in multiple languages? Or only in <local language> + English? It's been a while since I've seen one of these up close.

Re: Certified copy question

Things like ID cards and tax documents are Federal, and can be obtained in French on simple demand.

For documents originating from Town Hall: officials there normally have considerable discretion,...

Re: Certified copy question

Be grateful for what you have. It certainly beats having groups at each others' throats, rejecting the validity of The Other Team's core beliefs. As has been happening in a number of countries around...

Re: Lifetime ban - specialized lawyer?

I believe Mr Folinsky once defended a case almost exactly like this one, and won. The defence revolved around the legal concept of "mens rea". That's my understanding anyway, I Am Not A Lawyer...

Re: Certified copy question

If you request these in French rather than Dutch or German, then Canada will accept them without translation. This is easy for documents from Federal institutions. Not sure if your local Town Hall...

Re: Certified copy question

In Belgium, certified copies are typically provided by local government administration. Town Halls will routinely certify copies, free or for a nominal fee. The "I certify..." stamp will be in the...

Re: Lifetime ban - specialized lawyer?

Yes, that's what I meant. Apologies for the confusing wording.

From what I hear, the border guards were exceptionally intimidating towards the young lady. The "sign this and we'll release you...

Lifetime ban - specialized lawyer?

A friend of mine has a lifetime ban due to admitting to falsely claiming to be a US citizen. Married to a USC and has USC children. She says the admission was obtained by deceptive means.

I'm not...

Re: Where to buy a laptop?

I never ever buy new. Lots of big corporations view a fancy laptop as a corporate benefit. Every year (or two) they replace everything, and dump the used laptops onto the second-hand market. Supply...

Re: Brit Refused Entry For Trying To Work on ESTA.

For added amusement, try this article from a "quality" newspaper, The Guardian. It takes an undoubtedly true statement ("immigration surveillance deters illegals from seeking medical care") and mixes...

Re: Brit Refused Entry For Trying To Work on ESTA.

Every newspaper article about my "area of expertise" I've read makes me cringe. It's not just the yellow press - the quality papers can be just as helpless.

Have you heard about "Gell-Mann...

Re: Dual UK / Canadian citizen stranded in Jamaica

Turkey and Egypt are interesting examples, because their own region is such a disaster.

Many of the world's countries are embedded within regional agreements, e.g. CARICOM, ECOWAS, MERCOSUR,...

Re: Dual UK / Canadian citizen stranded in Jamaica

Even with visa-free travel, it's usually advantageous to enter a country with a passport of that region (given friendly relations, of course), e.g.

When visiting the US, use your Canadian PP, not...

Re: TSA PreCheck Experience

This much is true. But I think that the US govt has accepted so many TSA PreCheck applications, that the benefit is now limited at best. Cynical minds may wonder if the govt likes doing as many...

Re: Claiming Canadian citizenship through grandparent

Also, many historical "Canadian" passports list exactly how the holder acquired British Subject and Canadian Domicile. See the attached pic of a 1931 passport.

Anon, does your grandmother's...

Re: Claiming Canadian citizenship through grandparent

I'm by no means an expert, but I fear things could be much more complicated than that !

Before the creation of Canadian Citizenship in 1947, a Canadian was just a British Subject with Canadian...

Re: TSA PreCheck Experience

If you have a Canadian connection, it might make more sense to apply for Nexus. That's actually half the cost of TSA PreCheck, and combines the benefits of Global Entry, PreCheck, and SENTRI (Mexican...

Re: Any advice on lapsed PR welcomed!

The difficulty here is that laypeople like us are all working with a sample size of n=1. It worked for us, or it didn't. An immigration consultant or lawyer with a long track-record of PR abandonment...

Re: Any advice on lapsed PR welcomed!

No PR in breach of the Residency Requirements should be writing to IRCC without proper legal advice. As long as you let sleeping dogs lie, you still have options.

DigitalGhost, maybe he already had a valid ESTA on that passport?

The elderly gentleman's British passport (shown in the article) does not have the words "European Union" on its cover. Meaning it...
