Re: Emigrating to NZ

And this is one of the big things that shocked me - like some early social menopause. In 2019 I went out, in 2020 I don't.

And one reason why it's so hard to make friends and feel like you belong....

Re: Emigrating to NZ

I'm pretty sure that a lot of the problems stem from the difference between perception and reality.
A country that the majority of the world believe is some sort of nirvana (see also Canada), is...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

I know you don't want any more anecdotal experiences, but this came out today and is exactly what I tried to communicate.
My kiwi friends thinks that there will be a return to more traditional...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

I agree about jobs Purrball. The role in advertising that I have done for 25 years in London, just does not exist here. Instead 'my' responsibilities are divided up amongst other roles - people...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

The money thing is a weird one. It makes me feel quite greedy talking about it as a big issue, but without it we would be screwed.

I have friends here who moved from the north of England to...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

My brother is a police superintendent, specialising in recent years in gang crime, modern day slavery and anti terrorism.
I am in no doubt that this type of crime is more prevalent in the UK. But,...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

I think it's unfair to say that you are just hearing from people who haven't 'succeeded', rather I think it's people who want to dispel some common myths about NZ and warn caution.
I responded ...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

Thank you.

I think your friend's experience illustrates the problem - the lack of consistency.
Coming from a country where every school teaches the national curriculum and teachers are monitored...

Re: Emigrating to NZ

I am with Moses on this.
As you may have seen from previous posts I am slightly down on all things NZ, but one thing that I am objective about is education, and with my daughter about to change...

Re: struggling to settle

Moses2013 So true. I had little choice, but I knew that a quieter life wasn't for me after 30 years in big cities. My brother lives in a small village in the West Midlands and we always took the piss...

Re: struggling to settle

From Kiwis "I bet you're glad you're here not London right now"
From Londoners "You have Jacinda"

I'm lonely. I do have 'safe' people I can talk/moan to, but I feel I have to 'ration' myself to...

Re: struggling to settle

I know exactly how you feel.
I have been here a year (TODAY!!!) and it's not got better for me, and if I could go home I would.
We also moved from London and I desperately miss it.
Like you I...

Re: Coronavirus

News organisations like the NY Times, BBC, Daily Telegraph are saying that mid 2021 is the earliest that experts predict a vaccine could be approved:Most experts think a vaccine is likely to become...

Re: Coronavirus

I think we've got ourselves into a bit of a corner.
The idea that borders will remain closed until there is a vaccine (which in reality means a working vaccine that has been distributed and...

Re: Coronavirus

I read this last night and it does make me wonder where this commonly held prediction leaves NZ:

One outcome is now looking almost certain: This virus is never going away.

The coronavirus is...

Re: Coronavirus

Charismatic - I meant in theory as I suspect none of those studies are NZ based and we've already concluded there's no getting out!

The WHO have just announced that there is unlikely to be a one...

Re: Coronavirus

To be honest, I suspect it may all be academic - demand will become so low, that it will not be commercially viable for airlines to run services, and most expats will not see their family for years....

Re: Coronavirus

When I booked the flights there was no quarantine, let alone paid quarantine so I did not have to budget for it.

It won't last forever for some people, but obviously for others it will.
I don't...

Re: Coronavirus

I will not do anything illegal or against the rules.

It's also not really going to be holiday, more a visit to see my dying father.
Believe me, if I could delay it a year and still expect to...

However, I think that if the expectation is that only 10% of travellers will be required to pay, I...
