All docs were originals + copies for items we wanted back i.e the title deed, bank statements. No actual passports / ID cards were sent. Since a complete copy of my wife's current passport was given...

Yes and both times were at LHR. On the first entry when asked, my wife said she had a spouse visa application in progress and the border force officer wished her good luck with the application.

We entered the UK twice over Christmas and New Year and there was no issue at immigration.
