Lost Passport & Green Card - traveling to UK in < 2 weeks

Hi, I currently live in the US (on a Green Card) and plan to move back to the UK (from San Francisco) and have flights (from San Fran to London) booked for departure in less then 2 weeks time....

The other option we were considering was to travel back to the UK under the pretense that we were just on vacation visiting family with our kids traveling on their US passports on tourist visas...
