Re: 401k or UK Pension

Spot on, because of your inputs on 401k, I went back and did some more checking around, I've increased my 401k contribution to 10% for now (rather than 5% to match). I'm still not near...

Re: 401k or UK Pension

Yeah, already doing the low NI voluntary contributions, low as 100gbp or something a year, great deal! Thanks

Re: 401k or UK Pension

Oh - I read somewhere that you could still contribute to a UK pension, just not take advantage of the benefits. That's really odd, I called them up and they were willing to send me direct debit...

Re: Options for investments (IRA, 401k etc)

Yup! Currently doing this to make sure I don't have any gaps whilst I decide on what to do in the future. Luckily my company was willing to cover these expenses for the first couple years.

Re: Options for investments (IRA, 401k etc)

Yes good point, for this reason alone I doubt I'll be getting US citizenship any time soon, if at all, even if I decide to stay for the duration of my green card.

Re: Options for investments (IRA, 401k etc)

That's good to know, I did get confused a bit. It is dependent on tax residency, as opposed to the US, where if you are a citizen all income is taxed globally regardless of residency.

I guess I...

Options for investments (IRA, 401k etc)

Hey all,
I've been in the US for nearly 2 and a half years and I'm pretty chuffed that my company has agreed to sponsor me for a green card, and we have already gotten past the first couple steps....

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

Those comments about what they've covered are things I pushed for and had to explain, it's been a tiring process. But I agree, it's just that things have changed in the last few days, being shifted...

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

I understand, however the offer included that the transition would be handled for me, which has not been the case.

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

I'm going to request for professional services to handle this transition - neither myself or the company have any idea what's going on. I'll keep everyone updated, hopefully I don't have to turn this...

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

Do you mean that the company would pay for it directly? I'll bring it up but the initial plan was that I would pay for it, then reimburse it as an expense through the company. Which I was told would...

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

You are correct, the idea was that I would not be any worse off. However my salary etc has been bumped up relatively to the US and I negotiated to keep my UK holiday allocation, alongside the US bank...

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

No I agree - it's just that as it's new to the company, I have no idea whether my offer is actually a reasonable one. I had to push for a relocation budget of any sort, for example. Asking for an...

Re: Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

I see - do you know if that's something that employees being relocated on assignments usually ask to be covered by their salary?

I can't pay into my UK pension plan...? That's not something...

Assignment from the UK onto US payroll

I thought I'd make a separate thread as I have some concerns about how my employment transfer is progressing.

I've made a previous post about generally moving to the US, however I'm wondering if...

Re: UK to Chicago.. in a couple weeks!

Did you find that you had to manage a lot of other things yourself as well? As I'm being moved to the US payroll for a year they cannot pay directly into my student loan or pension plan. So that...

Re: UK to Chicago.. in a couple weeks!

Thinking about this further, would a year assignment not be classed as a business expense? I'm not relocating to be a permanent resident? Is this a ... grey area?

Re: UK to Chicago.. in a couple weeks!
