OK update. So leasing a car when you've just arrived in the country is hard! Who knew?! :D The only companies my wife and I could find that lease to people who are new to the country with a new visa...

So to be clear I'd have to say we're not immigrating to the US even if we bought a house and lived in it? Or can we only buy property if we intend to rent it out to others? Like an investment...
