Re: The cheese and wine whine!

Living in France I am spoiled for cheese, however half the varieties taste vaguely like camembert, which I hate.

The Roqueforts and other blue cheese varieties however - heaven.

Most large big...

The research supports my "nonsense" more than your apparent blank-slate hypothesis.

Yes, every child that starts to take piano lessons at age 4 turns into Arthur Rubinstein.

Re: Information on Toronto High Schools

Earl Haig Secondary School in North York has a very highly-regarded arts program. If your son has talent in visual arts, a musical instrument, dance, or drama, he could audition. Of course you'd...

Re: Grammar schools

Well I did say *mostly*.

Yes, a young violinist would need to be taught some discipline to practice enough and power through particularly difficult passages. A swimmer could be taught an exercise...

Re: PEI - Thinking of moving

Better idea would be to move to the Halifax area - economy not stellar but pretty good, shouldn't be terribly hard to find something - and rent a vacation home or cottage in PEI for a couple weeks...

Re: Grammar schools

I'm not sure why people think intelligence and book smarts can be "nurtured" any more than swimming speed or violin virtuosity.

I realize that many in the education industry owe their jobs to the...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

The idea that AC flights are more commonly late than any other airline does not ring true to me. I'm not saying you are making it up but it could be that your own biases (i.e. that anything Canadian...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Then you'd know that going from American Airlines, Delta, or any of the mainstream US airlines to Air Canada is like going from No Frills to Pusateri's, and for about the same cost. AC a tad more...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Clearly you have never flown on any US-based airline in existence.

Re: Suggestions for BC areas to look at

Victoria may be known for its retiree population, but it's received an increasing number of middle-class housing refugees from Vancouver of all ages. Even the start-up scene run by people in their...

Re: Moving to Calgary

I would consider this a benefit. Housing and rents are very affordable after years of inflated prices.

Whatever other difficulties you may encounter moving to Calgary, finding a nice place to live...

Re: UK law student moving to Canada (Vancouver)

Law is saturated with young graduates in Canada. I'm sure there are certain arms of the legal profession that have greater demand than others - some of the experts on this forum (of which I am not)...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

But Jerseygirl, you can simply buy a small thermos and keep refilling it with filtered water for when you go out. Perhaps keep a few water bottles in the car for emergencies.

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Plastic waste is where my otherwise libertarian views crumble to the ground.

If I had my way, I would ban all single-use plastic bags and bottles tomorrow. No grace period. I may allow plastic...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Blue water sounds pretty extreme. I'm sure it was still perfectly safe to drink but I can understand the reservations.

I don't quite get the Scotland/filtered water reference...?

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Why buy bottled water at all? It's very wasteful and tap water is perfectly fine (and I find it usually tastes better than bottled water). I've drank (drunk?) tap water in dozens of countries and I...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

I know you directed this question to Oink, but for myself the issue is more to do with public sectors jobs that have direct comparisons in the private sector. Clearly this would not include doctors...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

No, of course not. Although doctors are technically "public sector" in Canada, clearly my post was aimed more at office and municipal workers who have taken their privileged position to the extreme.

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Not sure what you mean. I was simply responding to the topic of the thread.

I am not making any assumptions as to the financial circumstances of any particular individual on this forum.

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Subject to applicable labour laws, yes.

There used to be a common understanding - nothing written down, but everyone more or less knew the deal. The public sector paid less than the private sector...

Re: Pay check to pay check living, about half of Canadians do.

Bingo.

IMHO public sector unions should be banned. Those who work on the public dime in monopolistic and privileged positions should not have the power to hold society for ransom.

Roosevelt and...

Re: older drivers - what do you think?

A version of this happened to my grandmother years ago. Luckily it was not fatal. She left to run an errand and became lost, speeding down the highway. Eventually the cops stopped her and took her...
