Hi!

Like many of you, I'm enjoying that time of the year prep'ing the tax return and other fiscal obligations (with the help of the accountant provided by my wife's employer).
One of those is...

Re: My first employed tax return.

We're in pretty much the same situation.
For what I understand you'll need to ask for a delayed tax return (ie do it in October), to receive your tax doc from HMRC, and with it ask not to pay taxes...

Re: My first employed tax return.

Well the wages are WAY higher than what she earnt, UNLESS all the relocation expenses the company paid directly (ie we didn;t pay a penny, no reimbursement) is somehow considered as income and the...

Re: My first employed tax return.

She had a call indeed, but even though the questions were rather comprehensive, their website seems to be a total pain to use. And there isn;t a lot of explanations on W2s for those who'd like to get...

Re: W-4 married fillign single (but declare jointly for Tax Refund)

Thanks for the replies.
I think we'll ask an accountant at some point to double check my maths and whether the W4 we both gave were somehow accurate or leading to massive withholdings (I'm talking...

Re: W-4 married fillign single (but declare jointly for Tax Refund)

And I agree both withholding at single rates is the safest way to avoid having too little withholding. It's just the other part that is very confusing (cf. quote on my 1st post)

W-4 married fillign single (but declare jointly for Tax Refund)

Hey y'all.

So my wife has been employed for a few months now, and I've just started a new job early 2018.
I've filled a W-4 form for administrative paperwork, and now that I do my actual maths,...

Re: USC abroad and IRS taxes

Don't you have to consolidate your corp incomes to the US?

Re: Private pension in the UK

Well that's what they say on paper... We may have well been very lucky when we opened our account in France, they never asked any questions regarding wealth/income when UK and US accounts were open...

Re: Private pension in the UK

You may also see with HSBC US (the international branch) if they can open an account in the US and then ask to open an account in the UK.
When we moved from France to the UK, we basically did that...

Re: Your opinion please.

I heard Canada is a good place to go to eventually end up in the US, I think once you're a perm resident/citizen there are visa options that may be easier. Not sure if that's 100% legit though.

Re: Your opinion please.

Also depending on what kind of job you do, an """easy""" (note the "") way could be a L1 visa within an US company. But that's not something you can really target to (rather wish for, at best) when...

Re: Retirement otuside the US for non-US citizens: 401(k) vs Roth 401(k)

And in my case (or durham_lad's) as an expatriate, receiving tax-free money from ROTHs instead of having to pay a flat 30% to the IRS on any withdrawal (both contributions and interets) during...

Re: Retirement otuside the US for non-US citizens: 401(k) vs Roth 401(k)

Thanks! France *should* be similar as there's the same kind of treaty between both countries - I'll still ask French tax services though.

I think I'll go for a Roth 401(k) then (tax wise it'll be...

Re: Retirement otuside the US for non-US citizens: 401(k) vs Roth 401(k)

Thanks for your reply durham_lad.

So am I right to think the UK consider withdrawals from your Roth IRA as already been taxed in the US (which they are by definition, except the compound interest...

Re: Retirement otuside the US for non-US citizens: 401(k) vs Roth 401(k)

I was thinking of State income tax.

Also, you might well be right 401(k)s would have to be fully withdrawn/closed BUT I think you can transfer then to an IRA? Not too sure if that's the case/what...

Retirement otuside the US for non-US citizens: 401(k) vs Roth 401(k)

Hey all!

My wife and I have been in the US for several months now, and we're both working, so things are quite alright.

We're trying to anticipate our retirement, and try to diversify the...

Hi all.

We sent everything-ish this morning but had the surprise of having to send our passports separately. We thought they'd be in the same envelope...
That means that an envelope has my wife's...

Re: L1A/L2 "on hold"

Thanks for sharing your experience :)
I guess it's always a case that docs CAN be asked during the interview. Same for all papers the attornet sent us. It's confusing when you have a 80 pages (maybe...

Re: L1A/L2 "on hold"

So my wife asked for new I-129S, and we received them (well, 3 copies).
She emailed the ambassy and we received almost in the same day the courier instructions and list of files to submit. That was...

Re: L1A/L2 "on hold"

Overthink is my middle name!

The attorney decided at the end to send a new form to the company so that they date+sign it (as to not have the same date on the old I-129S).
We prefer to take a few...
