Re: Maternity Care

Congratulations Emma!
As Jo said most care is accessed via the GP. However, the GP may not be aware of all your options locally - so maybe do a bit of internet research. GPs tend to refer you...

Re: Maternity Care

Tillysmum - sounds great. Nambour Hospital are trying to get something similar up and running. The women find it a really helpful resource - hopefully it can expand.

Re: Maternity Care

Hi Kazza1
Breastfeeding is culturally acceptable in oz. I was very surprised and pleased to find that the vast majority of women actually start out breastfeeding (over 90% in Nambour Hospital). Many...

Re: Maternity Care

Baby75 - I'm not sure how much/how the system works for you. I am no longer doing shifts at Nambour in an attempt to gain my sanity back. Probably best to access a GP when you get here and ask them...

Re: Maternity Care

Ozzidoc

The doctors have indemnity insurance. So did independent midwives until a few years ago when access to it was removed = many stopped working. Doctors get sued more than midwives probably...

Re: Maternity Care

Lynda - If the obs doesn't get to the birth (and they sometimes don't) the midwife catches the baby but the obs still gets the cash.

Baby75 - epidurals are wonderful things in some circumstances....

Re: Maternity Care

Hi Lynda

Your unit sounds good. It seems to be the bigger units in the South that are going under.

Midwifery here is very dependent on where you practice. I have heard that Victoria and Sydney...

Re: Maternity Care

They are less willing to do an epidural because it increases your chance of an instrumental birth and other complications. Also, because in small hospitals the anaesthetist is shared with the rest of...

Re: Maternity Care

The problem is not just for those with private health cover who have to pay for the 'gaps'. The tax payer also pays into the private system via medicare safety net. Once this was put in place...

Re: Maternity Care

Deryans... I'm sure your little screamer was well worth it!

A normal hospital birth costs $4k on average

So, it doesn't take a genius to work out why the c-section rates are so much higher in...

Re: Maternity Care

Hi PoppetUk
If you use the public system for your maternity care any type of birth is free. So, you don't have to worry about cost.
Whether you want to try a natural birth this time is entirely up...

Re: Maternity Care

I only know people working in cities. London sounds scary at the moment. Not enough midwives cos we are all over here (ha ha).

Re: Maternity Care

The NHS maternity system seem to be heading down hill since I left 3 years ago. I am hearing terrible things from friends still working as midwives.

I think women here get a better experience in...

Re: Maternity Care

Hi BrisbaneBound2008
The film will be on limited release - not sure what that means exactly. I managed to get a preview thanks to some birth community connections. Fantastic, shocking, beautiful,...

Re: Maternity Care

Hi
No, I am not going by the private hospital's I worked in - which actually had low rates of c-section at 35%. I recently gave a talk on the Maternity System and used Government statistics as...

Re: Maternity Care

As far as I am aware - yes.
I have looked after women who have had to transfer from their private care into medicare because they could no longer afford the 'gap' payments. One poor woman was paying...

Re: Maternity Care

Congratulations Deryans!

Private obstetricians favour c-sections because they are convenient and bring in more cash. They are also experts in high risk / complications and don't know much about...

Re: Maternity Care

The system here is very different (and in my opinion not as good) as the UK.
As a midwife who has worked in the public and private system here:

Private
*you know your dr, who may or may not...

Re: Midwives: Policy on Homebirthing

Just as a point of interest...
There are a number of birth workers out here. Unregistered 'lay midwives', although they cannot say they are midwives for legal reasons. Anyhow, they do most of the...

Re: Midwives: Policy on Homebirthing

Thanks Dr Dan - it is great to be backed up by an obstetrician (both on here and in practice)

I really miss the professional relationship between obs and mw I experienced in the UK. There was...

Re: Midwives: Policy on Homebirthing

Hi All
Sorry to hear about your relatives Ozzidoc. Maternity Coalition is pro-choice - whether that is home, birth centre or hospital. Home birth is only the best option for some women. However, at...

Hi Ozzidoc

Sorry for the delay - I've been too busy to check this site!

Re: Midwives: Policy on Homebirthing

Couldn't resist this one!

I am a midwife with experience of hospital and homebirth. I have just taken the step to move out of the hospital system in Oz and become an Independent Midwife. I can't...

Re: Calling Practice Nurses Sunshine Coast!

I'm a midwife with experience of running antenatal clinics and post-natal visiting (birth as well of course). As you can imagine I am unable to work as what I consider to be a 'midwife' here. I have...

2.5 years on the sunshine coast

I haven't been on here for ages and thought I'd give a quick update from a 'long-term' perspective. Please note that my experiences / observations are about the Sunshine Coast and may not apply to...
