Counter Signatures

I am applying for UK passports for my American born children. Since it's their first passport, their photos need to be counter signed. I know that having a British Citizen signing them is preferable....

Consular birth registration is optional but I would personally recommend it

I was wondering what the benefits are to registering the birth, as opposed to just applying for a passport.
