Counter Signatures

I am applying for UK passports for my American born children. Since it's their first passport, their photos need to be counter signed. I know that having a British Citizen signing them is preferable....

How do I get all the correct documentation for a passport? From what I have read, they will need to be citizens. Sorry, but I'm still confused

Consular birth registration is optional but I would personally recommend it

I was wondering what the benefits are to registering the birth, as opposed to just applying for a passport.
