Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

See the trouble the London mayor is in. However, I'd suggest a new thread as this is rather off topic.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Hi All

Thanks heaps for your advice. I've just gotten work in St Albans, so I guess I'm going to be looking for a place in that area!

You've all been wonderful.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Ok, I see what you mean. Teachers' pay in the UK does seem pretty poor. And for London, given rental costs, it would have to be much higher to compensate.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

In Australia we use BBQs as a type of rain dance.

Thanks for the info. I have friends that spent time in Dublin and they couldn't handle the lack of sunlight.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

My situation may be different from many other primary teachers. My partner earns more than I ever will and needs access to large work centres. So we are able to afford more than I would otherwise.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

That's great to know. I'd heard from people who used to live in the UK that there isn't the same cafe culture as in Australia.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

That makes sense. My understanding was that anywhere that is easily commutable to London would be very expensive.

Hopefully the population isn't as old as the town.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Thanks. I'm guessing it's expensive because of its closeness to London. Importantly, there seem to be cafes!

Hehehe. I'm rather used to that in Sydney. I like walking to restaurants/cafes.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Thanks.

Looking at that area. Seems that Luton would be good for easy access to London via rail. Is Luton nice?

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Just the one munchkin at this point in time. Seems everyone has biases. Thanks for lots of good info! My general knowledge of London comes from a BBC Jane Austin miniseries...

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

I find that easy to believe. If it wasn't for the weather, I would have loved to consider Scotland.

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Let me know how you go.

Sounds like you have a better grasp on it than I do! Cambridge seems to be much harder to travel to London via public transport (for tourism rather than work). Is that...

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

That's good to know. Reading seems to be on the nose. May I ask what you don't like about it?

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Thanks, I'll have a look at the areas. I've heard the south side of London be disparaged a few times. Is there any real difference?

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

What makes Reading so bad?

Do the villages have cafes? I love the idea of beautiful countryside, but I need a few creature comforts like good internet, a cafe and a pub!

Re: Seeking Advice on where to move to in England

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'll check out TES. I've used them for teaching resources before.
Rent wise, I'm looking for less than £1250 a month in rent. I get that much of London is a lot more...
