That is true. A Spanish couple in the UK would be allowed to name their child as per Spanish surname conventions.

And British couples would be allowed to use both their surnames, in either order...

UPDATE

Our request was refused for a second time.
We followed advice and tried putting all three names as forenames without calling them second or middle names, but the women who dealt with us...

Yes I´ve experienced similar problems with my middle name.

I presume both your daughters were registered in the UK?

Actually it should be done within eight days from birth but if necessary that can be extended up to 30 days from birth.

I hope so. We will try but it comes down to whether they will allow us to put three names on the form when the form states only two allowed.

UPDATE

My partner has just corrected me. Apparently the form asks for `dos nombres simples o uno compuesto`, `two simple names or one compound`.

That´s an interesting take on it. I haven´t seen a Spanish birth certificate yet (we delayed registering the baby) but the registration form asks for and only has space for one forename / first...

Yes rachelk - I got the impression that the reason the woman wouldn´t allow it was that there was no space for it on the system!

BritInParis . two forenames are common here but that´s not what...

I just realised that maybe I´m wrong to talk of hyphenated names but should perhaps be referring to them as compound names?

My partner and I would welcome any help you can give us. I´m British, she is Spanish and we live in Barcelona.

Our daughter was born here recently. She needs to be registered here...
