Thanks for the heads - up Brian, I wondered if there was a car ferry from any other port.

Also accomadation in other than the big package holiday box-like hotels? Anyone any ideas please?

Log on to http://www.yell.com that's the UK yellow pages. You should find cheaper car rental companies than the big 3. Maybe off-airport but they usually will deliver by arangement....
